Andalusia shows its innovative potential at Smart Agrifood Summit

Extenda-Andalucía Exports and Foreign Investment organised the participation of a dozen Andalusian firms in the Smart Agrifood Summit, the leading meeting in the industry for the creation of innovation ecosystems in the European agri-food sector, which was held between 30 September and 1 October at the Trade Fairs and Congress Centre in Malaga. This is a new area of innovative business linked to the agri-food complex in which Andalusia has exported 147 million euros between January and July 2021, with a growth of 16.2%, its second-best figure in history.

Andalusian exports to the United Kingdom (UK) have increased in the first seven months of the year by 16.1% year-on-year to reach 1,413.9 million euros, according to the Brexit Monitoring Report on the Andalusian economy presented by the Department of Economic Transformation, Industry, Knowledge and Universities of the Government of Andalusia.

Andalusia’s agri-food exports reached 7,756 million euros in the first seven months of 2021, its best historical record for a January-July period since comparable data has been available (1995), thanks to year-on-year growth of 7.3%. This is a strategic sector, which will contribute more than 5,000 million euros of the positive foreign trade balance to the regional economy in 2021. This significant increase is due to the remarkable activity of the Andalusian agro-industry, which is growing not only in sales but also with a strong increase in the number of exporting companies, up 19.8% year-on-year to 3,522, according to Extenda data.

Andalusian exports to the Asian continent reached the figure of 1,607 million euros in the first six months of 2021, which represents an increase of 22.8% over the same period last year, according to Extenda data. In turn, these data reflect a clear sign of recovery, by practically equalling the export figures of the first half of 2019, the period before the pandemic, when they reached 1,623 million euros.

Andalusia recorded a new record for meat product exports in the first half of 2021 by reaching 263 million, the highest figure achieved by the community for this period since there have been comparable records (1995), thanks to a 13.9% increase in sales compared to the first half of 2020, benefiting all Andalusian provinces and 16 of its first 20 foreign markets. Turnover in the industry grew by 36% year-on-year in Andalusia last June compared to the same month last year, 17 points higher than the Spanish average. This is the result of the data relating to the Industrial Turnover Index published by the Andalusian Institute of Statistics and Cartography (IECA), which reports to the Regional Ministry of Economic Transformation, Industry, Knowledge, and Universities.
