All Andalusian schools will have 1GB Internet connection this year

More than 3,000 public schools in Andalusia now have 1GB fibre optic connectivity services and WiFi access in all their educational spaces, making Andalusia, as certified by the European Gigabit Society (European Commission), the European region with the best connectivity and speed in its network of schools. It is expected that by the next school year 2021/22 these connections will reach all public schools in Andalusia.

This news has been announced by the Regional Minister of Education, Javier Imbroda, stating that “the digital transformation in the educational field “is key not only to reduce the digital divide, but also for Andalusian students to acquire the necessary digital skills to make the most of the use of technologies in their teaching-learning process”.

The Government of Andalusia’s digital strategy will provide schools with more than 100,000 portable devices with the new operating system based on free software EducaAndOS, to reduce the digital divide among students. Also the delivery during this academic year of 1,800 touch panels and 900 robotics and aerospace research kits.

On 27 November last, a historic agreement was reached with Google and Microsoft to make available their main technological solutions, which complement the platforms that the Regional Ministry already makes available to the educational community. In addition, these agreements included training activities for more than 40,000 teachers, which began in December and will continue until the end of the academic year.
