Andalusian olive oil exports grow by 22.5%

Andalusian olive oil exports reached 852 million euros in the first four months of 2021, an increase of 22.5% compared to the same period last year, according to data from Extenda.

Olive oil is Andalusia’s leading export product, and its growth has helped to boost Andalusian exports in the first four months of the year. Andalusia remains the world leader in olive oil sales in the first four months of 2021, accounting for 75% of the total exported by Spain, i.e. three out of every four euros of Spanish olive oil sales to the world.

It should also be noted that 63% of Andalusian olive oil sales to the world during the first four months of 2021 corresponded to extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), which demonstrates the commitment of companies in the sector to launch the highest quality product abroad.

The CEO of Extenda, Arturo Bernal, said that “olive oil is one of Andalusia’s main ambassadors in the world. A product of excellence, with a consolidated position abroad, which will once again gain momentum in 2021, making an outstanding contribution to the reactivation of Andalusian exports and recovering the path of growth”.

This figure also represents an increase of 6.2% compared to the first four months of 2020, which reflects that those companies that are committed to internationalisation are successful. These companies also account for 87% of total Andalusian sales in the sector.

The leading international market for Andalusian olive oil is Italy, with 222 million euros in the first four months of 2021, 26.1% of the total, an increase of 68% compared to the same period last year, and the fastest growing destination in this period of the top ten.

In second place is the United States, with 151 million euros, 17.7%, up 37%; followed by Portugal, with 120 million, 14.1%, up 35% in this period; and France, with 51 million, 6% of the total. Andalusia demonstrates its commitment to opening up to new markets with its next destinations. Fifth is Japan, with 29 million, 3.4% of the total, followed by Australia, with 25.1 million, 2.9%, and China, with 23.9 million, 2.8%, which grew by 16% in this period.

Rounding out the Top 10 are the United Kingdom, with 17.7 million, up 2.1%; Canada, with 17 million, which is the third fastest-growing market, up 58%; and Mexico, with 16.3 million, which is the second, up 67% in the period.

In addition, other markets such as Saudi Arabia (13th destination for sales), which rose by 66% to 11.6 million euros, India (15th), which grew by 46% to 8.7 million euros, and Ecuador (25th), which grew by 49% to 3 million euros, also recorded significant progress.
