Carmelo García Barroso International Wine Research Award established

The Consejo Regulador of Denomination of Origin of Sherry Wines, the University of Cádiz (UCA), and the Jerez City Council have established the Carmelo García Barroso International Wine Research Award of the Marco de Jerez, in homage and posthumous recognition of the figure of this professor, researcher, and disseminator of wine culture.

This is a competition for scientifically rigorous research work on the wines of Jerez, in all their facets: viticulture, oenology, historical, economic, business, social and cultural aspects. For this first edition, universities, training centres, and researchers are invited to submit their work from today until 31 August. The prize money is 3,000 euros.

The now deceased professor went on to publish more than 150 scientific articles, motivated, as he acknowledged, by “the desire to contribute to the fight against disease”, a vocation that was clear to him from a very young age.

García Barroso gave numerous conferences on oenology, wine production and even “oenocosmetics”, was director of the Andalusian Centre for Viticultural Research (CAIV), as well as president of the Association of Oenological Research Groups (GIENOL), among other positions.
